Happy Friday, friends!
I’m writing from chilly Las Vegas! As you may know/recall, my parents live here. I flew out last night and am here for the weekend.
In case you’re thinking I have boatload of PTO banked up (I don’t), my company is on a 9-80 schedule, which means we work 9 hours per day Monday through Thursday, and get every other Friday off (the Friday we do work is a traditional 8-hour day). It’s a sweet deal.
Anyways, I thought I’d share some of my favs of the week! Here we go:
Running Outside in Vegas
I think I’ve mentioned this, but I joined a gym around the holidays, so have been doing most of my runs on a treadmill (more info about why I’m enjoying that here). I haven’t run outdoors in probably months. This morning, though, I went for a run around my parents’ neighborhood and it was lovely. I mean, frigid, and my hands felt frozen and there was snot dripping down my face, but, you know - lovely. I was singing aloud to myself like a crazy person (obsessed with this song and this song), and just overall enjoyed being outside.
I know most people think casinos and nightclubs and strippers when Vegas comes to mind, but there’s actually some gorgeous mountains and great, paved running paths here. It’s where I first began running outside, away from a treadmill, when I was in college, and really began to love it. There’s something very peaceful about it. (And as much as i complain, the chilly air is always nice to run in!)
If you follow me on Instagram, you also know a bird mysteriously pooped on me while I was running. No idea how or when that happened, but I was at a stoplight at one point, looked down, and there was bird poop on one of my thighs. I’ve had multiple tell me it’s good luck, but…. seriously?
More Magazine Writing
My company - which I’ve been with since November and is in the aerospace/defense industry - puts out a print magazine on a quarterly basis. It’s mostly internal but available to be shared with customers or visitors to our office, and I weaseled my way into being able to write an article for it. I basically wouldn’t shut up telling everyone who works full-time on the magazine team that I like to write and edit til they assigned me an article for the Q2 edition. Now, this is not exactly the New Yorker or something, but I was SO jazzed to have an opportunity to interview folks and have a soon to come print byline. My piece is on field engineers (not surprising, considering the company is made of almost half engineers), and it was fun to be able to have interviewing and writing a magazine story as part of my work day. In an ideal world, i’d work AT a magazine (but I live in LA, and most magazines are in New York City...).
I’m not sure if I can share it with you once it’s printed, but if I can, I will!
Homemade Italian Food
Another perk of being at my parents’ house is homemade Italian food. I mean, OMG. I grew up eating pasta and homemade sauce and eggplant parmigiana on the regs, but I’m a less of a….. dedicated? talented? … cook than my mom, so I rarely have these kinds of meals on my own. It’s always a treat to be here and eat some of the more traditional/delicious stuff I was raised on. Tonight, we’re having baked ziti, which, if you’ve never had it, you are missing out! It’s basically pasta baked in a pool of Italian cheeses (ricotta and mozzarella) and pasta sauce. AMAZING.
….clearly I’m not not eating cheese right now. ;)
I’m off to tackle a couple more writing projects and maybe do some reading. I hope you guys have a wonderful weekend! xo
